Master Class Series with Mark Haim

An intermediate/advanced-level modern technique class that explores dynamic alignment, muscle efficiency, spatial clarity, movement initiation, and successional movement. Concepts will be explored with through image-driven improvisations, floor and standing exercises, and extended movement phrases. Class space is limited.

Mark Haim
Senior Artist in Residence at the UW Dance Program, Mark Haim holds a BFA degree from The Juilliard School and an MFA from Hollins University. He was Artistic Director of Mark Haim & Dancers from 1984-1987, and the Companhia de Danca de Lisboa from 1987-1990. Mark has created new works for many dance companies in the US, Europe and Asia, among them the Nederlands Dans Theater, Ballet Frankfurt, the Jose Limon Dance Company, the Joffrey II Dancers, the Rotterdamse Dansgroep, the Silesian Dance Theater, the Companhia de Danca de Lisboa, CoDanceCo, the TRANS Dance Co., and Ballet Pacifica. He has restaged his works on companies such as The Joffrey Ballet, the Bat-Dor Dance Company of Israel, Djazzex, and the Juilliard Dance Ensemble. He has been on the faculties of the American Dance Festival and NYU- Tisch School of the Arts, and has also taught at the NC School of the Arts, University of Illinois, Ohio University, SMU, VCU, Cornell, JMU,  and for schools and companies in Belgium, Holland, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Poland, Latvia, Russia, Argentina, Chile and Japan. He is a recipient of numerous grants, including a 1987 New York Foundation for the Arts Choreographers Fellowship, a 1988 and 1996 NEA Choreographers Fellowship, and grants from the NPN Suitcase Fund and ArtsLink, Inc. In 2000, he was awarded the Scripps/ADF Humphrey-Weidman-Limon Fellowship for Choreography. His full evening solo project, "The Goldberg Variations," has been performed at the American Dance Festival, the Danspace Project at St. Mark's Church, The John F. Kennedy Center, other venues in the U.S., Europe, Asia, and most recently at On The Boards in its 2006 Northwest Artist Series.  Mark is a Fulbright Senior Specialist.

Bellingham Repertory Dance is offering a chance for the community to see how they prepare for performances. Come attend a rehearsal on Sun., Sept. 28, 10-11:45am at the Firehouse Performing Arts Center, 1314 Harris Ave. in Fairhaven. The group's dancers can be seen practicing and fine-tuning one of their many dances for its Bellingham premier in their annual October production. The piece, "Everything was Night and Storm for Me," is an original work by Pablo Cornejo, well-known Seattle choreographer. It has been performed in Seattle and Quito, Equador, and his artistry is widely-known along the west coast and South America. Arrive and leave anytime between 10-11:45am, as there will be no formal performance. Conversations with the dancers are welcomed after the rehearsal. Come enjoy this exclusive experience! Master Class with Pablo Cornejo

Pablo Cornejo's modern class is influenced by his experience in many forms of movement, from Andean folkloric dance and ballet to modern dance, improvisation and contact. His class integrates this variety of vocabularies, which focuses on full - bodied phrase work utilizing the floor, momentum, upside down, perspectives and dynamic rhythm changes.

Pablo Cornejo
Pablo was born and raised in Quito, Ecuador. He relocated to Seattle in 1998 and founded Locate Performance Group with collaborating partner Paige Barnes. Pablo's work has been presented in Mexico, Cuba, Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador, San Francisco, and Seattle, most notably at On the Boards and Bumbershoot. He has choreographed for Cornish College of the Arts, Velocity Dance Center, d9 Dance Collective, Arizona State University, Glendale Community College, and Dance Gallery Bellingham. Pablo danced with Lingo dancetheater, Retazos (Cuba), La Compania Ballet Novo (Ecuador) and La Compania Nacional de Danza (Ecuador). He currently teaches at Open Flight studio, where he is a co-founding member.
